5 Ways to Help Your Kids Actually Enjoy Family Photos at Home

Here’s the truth: family photos with young kids don’t have to be stressful.
Especially when we do them in your own home.
As a Salt Lake City in-home family photographer, I’ve worked with lots of families who worry their kids won’t “cooperate.” And I get it—kids have big feelings, short attention spans, and a tendency to do the exact opposite of what we ask the moment the camera comes out.
But here’s the good news: they don’t have to perform. They don’t need to be on their best behavior. In fact, I expect a little chaos—it’s part of the magic.
That said, here are 5 gentle, tried-and-true ways to help your kids actually enjoy the session (and get photos you’ll love forever).
1. Set the Mood, Not the Stage
Skip the pep talk about “being good” or “smiling for the camera.” Instead, just let them know someone is coming over to hang out and take a few pictures while you play, snuggle, and do your thing. The more relaxed you are, the more at ease they’ll be.

2. Let Them Lead
During sessions, I follow their energy. If they want to jump on the bed, build a tower, or hide under the covers—I’m in. If someone needs a break or a snack? We pause. I gently guide the flow, but I never force it. Sessions feel more like play than posing.
3. Embrace the Imperfect Moments
The best photos rarely happen when everyone’s looking and smiling. The ones you’ll treasure are the giggles, snuggles, and spontaneous silliness. So if someone’s wiggly or wild, don’t stress. That’s your family’s magic—and I’m here to capture it.

4. Prep a Few Comforts
Keep it simple: favorite books, snacks, or a cozy blanket can work wonders. These little comforts help kids feel safe and happy—and sometimes turn into the sweetest photo props without even trying.

5. Take the Pressure Off
It’s okay if everything doesn’t go according to plan. We’re not aiming for perfection—we’re aiming for connection. And that looks different for every family. My calm energy and flexible approach allow space for your real life to shine through.
