How I Help Kids Feel Comfortable in Front of the Camera | Salt Lake City Family Photographer

One of the biggest concerns parents share with me before a session is, “What if my kids don’t warm up to the camera?” Trust me, I get it. As a mom myself, I know how unpredictable little ones can be—especially in new situations.

But here’s the good news: your kids don’t need to “perform” for me. My approach as a Salt Lake City family photographer is gentle, playful, and designed to meet children where they are.

Building Trust First

Instead of pulling out my camera right away, I take a few minutes to get on their level. I’ll ask them about their favorite games, compliment their cool shoes, or even let them peek through my lens. When kids see me as a friend, not just a photographer, they relax naturally.

Letting Kids Lead

Sessions aren’t about forcing smiles. If your child wants to twirl, run, or snuggle up to you, I follow their lead. By giving them space to express themselves, I capture images that feel genuine and full of personality. Part of the reason why I choose to offer longer sessions is that it allows kids to flow through their different moods naturally. They have time to adjust to the camera, time for snuggles and time to be silly.

Why It Works

Children thrive when they feel safe and unpressured. My own motherhood journey with neurodiverse kiddos has taught me patience and flexibility. Whether your little one is shy, energetic, or somewhere in between, I’ll create a space where they can simply be themselves.
